2026 Healthiest State Annual Awards FAQ

• Who can apply?

  Any individual working in Iowa, of any age or career stage, who is making a positive impact on health and well-being may be nominated. This work may be part of a professional role or through volunteer efforts.

• What do award recipients receive?

  • Statewide recognition

  • A special award presented by the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative 

  • Promotion through media and social channels

  • Opportunities to share their story and inspire others

• What questions do I have to answer?

• Where do we apply?

• When do you announce the winners?

  Winners will be announced in October during Healthiest State Month. 

• If I have applied in the past, can I apply again?

  Previous winners may be nominated again if they have continued to expand or significantly grow their impact since receiving the award. However, nominations should highlight new achievements, initiatives, or measurable outcomes that have occurred since the previous recognition.

• Can I nominate myself?

  Yes. Self-nominations are welcome!

• Do nominees need to live in Iowa?

  Nominees should be working in Iowa or making a measurable impact on the health of Iowans.

• Can I submit more than one nomination?

  Yes. Individuals and organizations are welcome to submit multiple nominations for different candidates who are making a meaningful impact on the health and well-being of Iowans.

• What if I’m part of a group that wants to apply and not an individual?

  The Annual Awards recognize individual leaders, but nominations may highlight the teams, organizations, or partnerships that helped make the work possible. The nomination should focus on the individual’s leadership and role in driving the effort.

• How are award recipients selected?

  A selection committee reviews nominations based on specific criteria.

• What support documents are needed in my application?

  We require two supporting documents/materials such as photos, testimonials, media coverage, and letters of support.  One letter of support is required.

• How can organizations support the awards?

  Organizations can support the awards through sponsorship, which helps recognize health leaders and expand efforts to improve well-being across Iowa.
