Staying Healthy at the Iowa State Fair

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the Iowa State Fair? Probably the latest fried food on-a-stick, the sweet smell of freshly made funnel cakes, or one of the many fair food options made infamous for offering. But did you know the Iowa State Fair also has plenty of healthy options to check out?

If you're planning on making a visit to the fair this year, the Iowa State Fair offers healthy (and tasty!) foods options to keep you feeling great all week long including veggie corndogs, salad on a stick, and more. Here are some of our favorites!

At the Iowa Pork Producers Association (main location: east end of Grand Avenue; satellite locations: east of the main stand and on Rock Island Avenue west of the Livestock Pavilion)

Grab a quick snack from the Iowa Egg Council’s Egg on a Stick stand!

Looking for other snacks that don’t pack a punch of nearly 1000 calories? The Iowa State Fair provides many options that meet the USDA guidelines for healthy meals. 

  • Entrées less than 600 Calories. 

  • Side dishes less than 300 Calories.  

  • Less than 35 percent of Calories from total fat.  

  • Less than 10 percent of Calories from saturated fat. 

  • Less than 35 percent of Calories from sugar. 

  • Less than 1000 mg of sodium
