Double Up Food Bucks Expands to Additional Locations as State Investment is Signed into Law
The Iowa Healthiest State Initiative is expanding its Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) program to additional locations across Iowa this month, further increasing access to fresh fruits and vegetables for Iowans using SNAP benefits. This expansion comes as the recently approved $1 million state appropriation to support the program has now been officially signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds after bipartisan support from the legislature.
The combined momentum of public investment and private partnership marks a significant step forward in expanding the reach of a proven, prevention-focused program that helps Iowans afford healthy food.
“Double Up Food Bucks continues to demonstrate that when healthy food is affordable and accessible, people use it,” said Jami Haberl, Executive Director of the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative. “With this new investment signed into law and expanded partnerships with retailers like Hy-Vee, we’re able to reach more communities and build on strong results across the state.”
Through this latest expansion, Double Up Food Bucks will now be available at 12 additional Hy-Vee locations and the Cultivate Hope Corner Store in Cedar Rapids, making it even easier for SNAP participants to access fresh produce where they already shop.

Double Up Food Bucks continues to see strong participation across Iowa, with a 97.5% redemption rate reported earlier this year—meaning nearly every available dollar is used by participants to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. The program matches up to $15 per day in SNAP purchases of fruits and vegetables, effectively doubling a household’s ability to bring home healthy food.
At a time when Iowa ranks 31st nationally for fruit and vegetable consumption, expanding access to affordable, healthy food remains a key strategy for improving long-term health outcomes across the state.
How Double Up Food Bucks works: When customers spend $15 on fresh fruits and vegetables using SNAP benefits at a participating location, they can earn $15 in Double Up Food Bucks. These bucks can be used to buy more fresh fruits and vegetables. The program matches what you spend—$1 for $1—up to $15 each day. To earn and use Double Up Food Bucks: SNAP/EBT customers must sign up for the Double Up Food Bucks Iowa program.
