There is a brand new park in town! Fourmile Mountain Bike Park is wooded land north of Copper Creek Lake.
Central Iowa Trail Association and Polk County Conservation are working together to create integrated trails and green spaces that will serve as recreation and conservation areas for the entire community. The project goal is to provide a soft surface trail system oriented towards recreational mountain biking, hiking, trail running, and groomed trails for winter fat biking
From East University Avenue, turn north on Williams Street. Travel 0.5 miles to Washington Avenue (no sign) and turn right. Park in the gravel lot. We will leave from there at 10:00 a.m.
We will head north on old 42nd and enter the trail system on Trail 102. We will cross over the creek and make a loop around the perimeter before we return on a trail named after Deucalion who survived a great flood and repopulated the earth by throwing stones on the ground. I estimate the total mileage will be about 2.0 miles.
If the dirt trail is muddy, we will walk the paved trail around the lake. Either way, we will walk slowly, think “stroll,” and no one will be left behind.
Fourmile MTB Park is still under construction. Hiking poles are useful, particularly where we cross construction access, but not a necessity.
–– I lead group walks on different trails a few times a month. This free Soft Trail Stroll series is designed to help people looking for a simple way to become more active, and to increase appreciation of our local soft trails.
What is a soft trail? Simply, it is an unpaved trail. Its surface may be dirt, grass, or crushed rock/gravel. I am an avid mountain biker and know all these trails very well. I can guarantee that no one will get lost!
