Bank of America announced a $25,000 donation to the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative for the Double Up Food Bucks program to address food insecurity in Iowa.

According to Feeding America, 229,500 people are facing hunger, 80,160 of which are children. On top of that, 40.7% of the households receiving SNAP benefits have children. During times when many families are facing economic uncertainty, it’s crucial to support fellow Iowans to make sure everyone has healthy food to put on the table.

Bank of America is supporting its employees’ health and safety while addressing one of the local communities’ most critical needs. Earlier this year, the company announced it would make a $50 donation to local hunger relief organizations and food banks for each dose of COVID-19 and flu vaccines received by employees in Iowa. The company made an additional contribution to address the increased need experienced by hunger relief organizations across the country. Bank of America previously provided $25,000 in funding to Iowa Healthiest State Initiative in support of local hunger relief efforts during the pandemic.

Iowa Healthiest State Initiative is a nonprofit organization driven to make sure every Iowan has the opportunity to live their healthiest life. The Double Up Food Bucks program is a SNAP-incentive program in Iowa that matches food assistance dollars 1:1 on purchases of fresh produce at participating farmers markets and grocery stores. In 2022, the program served 94 locations in 35 counties, benefitting more than 61,000 Iowans, and seeing more than 980,000 servings of produce purchased.

“The Double Up Food Bucks program increases access to healthy food, supports Iowa farmers and keeps dollars in the local economy.” says Jami Haberl, executive director, Iowa Healthiest State Initiative. “We’re thrilled to have the ongoing support of Bank of America, and we are thankful to have such a dedicated partner believe in our vision of ensuring every Iowan has the opportunity to live their healthiest life.”

The bank has been a longtime partner of Iowa Healthiest State Initiative, and with help from the bank’s donation, the Double Up Food Bucks program is providing healthy food to individuals and families throughout Iowa.

“Bank of America Iowa is dedicated to supporting healthy living through meaningful action, not empty words. We want to see Iowa grow and thrive, and organizations like the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative are taking the steps needed to make that happen.” said Annie Brandt, Senior Vice President, Bank of America Iowa. “However, they can’t do it alone. That’s why Bank of America has chosen to partner with HSI – to demonstrate our commitment to the wellbeing of our families, friends, and neighbors. We are incredibly excited to see how this partnership will empower Iowans to live healthy lives and boost our state toward its full potential.”

Food insecurity is a solvable problem, and Double Up Food Bucks is one of the many programs in Iowa leading the way in the work to make sure Iowans don’t have to go hungry. With the support of generous and passionate partners like Bank of America, the Iowa Healthiest Initiative can continue to grow healthy incentives across the state to reach as many Iowans as possible.
