2022 IPRA MINI GRANT WINNER

By Chase Langos on Wednesday, September 28, 2022

The Healthiest State Initiative and the Iowa Parks & Recreation Association (IPRA) partnered to provide mini grant opportunity for IPRA members to receive funding to support the Healthiest State 12th Annual Walk and walkability efforts in their community.

To be eligible, applicants were asked to demonstrate how they would use the funds to promote walking, social connectedness, and healthy habits within their community.

The winner was recognized at the IPRA Fall Workshop with a $500 mini grant in October 2022. Congratulations to the 2022 winner - Dallas Center!

Dallas Center plans to use the mini grant funds to create new signage around their 9-hole disc golf course. Many visitors aren’t aware of the course as it is within the city’s Memorial Park and currently features weathered and difficult to read signage.

The disc golf course requires an average of 3,000 steps to complete a 9-hole round and is a great way to share quality time with people of all ages or enjoy some physical activity alone. “City leaders are committed to keeping the course updated and busy,” said Shelley Horak, a Dallas Center Parks and Recreation Board Member. “This feature adds to the city’s attractiveness and is an important asset that encourages new players to begin learning how to play.”

The Healthiest State Initiative is excited to see such a fun public resource get a needed breath of fresh air!
