Double Up Food Bucks does three great things all at once: it increases access to healthy food, supports Iowa farmers and keeps dollars in the local economy. It's a win-win-win!

It's a 'Triple Win'!

Hundreds of thousands of Iowans struggle with food insecurity every day. Food insecure families should not have to choose between being hungry and being healthy. With Double Up Food Bucks, they don't have to make that choice!

Double Up Food Bucks in Iowa

HOW IT WORKS: Double Up Food Bucks is a SNAP-incentive program that matches purchases of fruits and vegetables at participating Iowa grocery stores and farmers markets $1:$1. Customers can use Double Up Food Bucks like cash on more fresh fruits and vegetables.

THE POTENTIAL IMPACT: Double Up Food Bucks encourages shoppers to visit the farmers market more often. Hundreds of thousands of Double Up Food Bucks are spent directly with local producers each year! When combined with the impact of purchases made at Iowa-owned grocery stores, the program's estimated economic impact could grow to $20 million per year if it were able to expand statewide!

CURRENT STATE:  In July 2020, Double Up Food Bucks was awarded funding that allowed us to expand our program to 100+ grocery stores, resulting in millions of Double Up Food Bucks redeemed for fresh produce by food-insecure Iowans. However, due to reduced funding, the program has been scaled back to select grocery stores effective January 1, 2022.

Help us restore funding:

The Healthiest State Initiative is requesting a direct, annual $1 million appropriation to support Double Up Food Bucks, a statewide nutrition incentive program, at Iowa farmers markets and grocery stores.
