2017 Double Up Food Bucks Farmers Market Application

Iowa Healthiest State Initiative is now inviting farmers markets and farm stands to apply to participate in the 2017 Double Up Food Bucks season, expected to run from May 1 – October 31. Applications are being collected by the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative (HSI) which facilitates the Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) program at farmers markets throughout the state.

Farmer Market and Farm Stand Application

Program Requirements

To qualify, farmers markets must: 

  1. Be able to accept SNAP benefits (minimum of one season of experience is preferred, but not required)
  2. Have a SNAP permit number from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS)
  3. Have a point of sale device and SNAP currency
  4. Demonstrate sufficient organizational capacity to handle the associated accounting and reporting
  5. Have written support to participate in the program from their governing and/or fiscal organization (if different from the market operations organization)

DUFB Participation - How it Works

If selected, Iowa Healthiest State will provide:

  1. All necessary program materials for implementation at your farmers market (DUFB silver tokens, flyers and posters advertising the program for distribution in your community, and signs for participating vendors)
  2. Required in-person and webinar format trainings in the spring of 2017
  3. Templates and tools for record-keeping and required program reporting to HSI
  4. An operations manual and technical assistance throughout the season
  5. Funds to help support the DUFB match at your market for the program season

Healthiest State Initiative expects that your farmers market will:

  1. Attend required training session in spring 2017
  2. Offer and distribute DUFB to SNAP customers at the point of sale during the DUFB program season
  3. Provide HSI with third-party verification of SNAP sales at the farmers market during the program season
  4. Promote DUFB and SNAP program at your farmers market and in the local community
  5. Complete all DUFB reporting requirements
  6. Participate in all program evaluation methods
  7. Ensure adequate capacity to operate the program and cover any associated administrative costs
  8. Communicate to both participating and non-participating vendors at the market about the DUFB program and promote the program and SNAP at your framers market through community channels
  9. Work to secure local funds to help support the DUFB match at your market for the program season
