The Decorah Community School District strives to support the health and well being of students, families, and the community. This work starts in early childhood. Decorah’s West Side Early Childhood Center recently hosted its first Food, Fitness and Fun Family Night.
Fruit “Super Heroes” enjoying local apples
Shanna Putnam Dibble, Elementary Learner Advocate for the Decorah District, teamed with teachers and community partners to create a family event that reached over 100 people. There was great community support from the Luther College Women’s Basketball team, the Decorah PTO (Parent Teacher Organization), Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness, and Country View Dairy. TOGETHER we grow healthy kids!
Spinach smoothies. Cheers!
Students and families explored Food and Fitness through a variety of activities. Students “cooked” turkey vegetable wraps and raspberry yogurt parfaits, listened to interactive stories about healthy lifestyles, created masterpieces with vegetable prints, donned capes and became fruit super heroes while trying local apples, pedaled fast to power a smoothie bike blender, and enjoyed many physical activities on the playground, all while spending quality time with their families and friends. Parents were given a variety of resources to support healthy living, and students participated in a drawing to win bike helmets and food and fitness related children’s books.
