Volunteer Iowa kicks off 5th annual Give Back Iowa challenge

8-week challenge encourages employer-supported volunteering

Volunteer Iowa announced the launch of the 5th annual Give Back Iowa challenge, which runs from April 1-May 31, 2019, to engage Iowans in employer-supported volunteering. Iowa employers are encouraged to pre-register by March 18 but can elect to participate at any time during the challenge.

The Give Back Iowa challenge is an opportunity for employees who volunteer to receive recognition by tracking and reporting their hours. The challenge was created in 2015 to promote employer volunteer initiatives for organizations of all sizes across the state.

Volunteering not only has a significant impact on meeting community needs, but employer supported volunteering has a positive impact on business, including improved employee engagement, organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and retention.

Employees at Lessing-Flynn in Des Moines take part in a volunteer activity at Meals from the Heartland during the 2018 Give Back Iowa challenge.

Employers with the highest average number of volunteer hours per employee during the Challenge period will be recognized with a visit by Gov. Kim Reynolds or Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg to their workplace.

Alliant Energy and the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative have returned this year as partners to support the challenge.

“We are excited to support the Give Back Iowa Challenge and its goal of encouraging more employer-sponsored volunteer opportunities," said Jami Haberl, executive director of the Healthiest State Initiative. “We know that volunteering helps boost employee engagement and job satisfaction, which ultimately leads to those employees leading happier and healthier lives, both in and out of the workplace.”
