Sen. Tom Harkin to deliver keynote at 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! Summit

Experts will gather to discuss implementing 5-2-1-0 strategies in education, community and health care sectors

The Healthiest State Initiative has announced that Senator Tom Harkin (Retired), who worked to keep individuals and families healthy for more than four decades in the U.S. Congress, will deliver the keynote address at the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! Summit on October 30 at Des Moines University. 

 “Throughout his career, Sen. Harkin has demonstrated leadership in the areas of health care and wellness,” said Jami Haberl, executive director for the Healthiest State Initiative. “The Harkin Institute continues to work on the issues that define his legacy and we are excited for Sen. Harkin to be able to share that with Summit attendees.”

Before his retirement from the U.S. Senate in 2015, Sen. Harkin served as chair of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. Highlights of his work in this role include: authoring provisions within the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, expanding funding for community health centers, introducing programs to enhance mental health care and guiding the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act.

The Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement was founded at Drake University in 2013 to focus on four issues including labor and employment, people with disabilities, retirement security and wellness and nutrition.

“Ensuring that Iowans not only have the knowledge to form healthy habits, but also have access to healthy choices, in their everyday lives is so important,” said Sen. Harkin. “5-2-1-0 provides a great framework for Iowa’s kids to follow.”

 The 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! Summit will bring together experts from across the state working in schools, child care, out-of-school programs, health care and communities to share their experiences of adopting strategies to support making healthy choice the easy choice in their environments.

Registration is $30 and includes attendance to the summit, conference materials, lunch and 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! refillable water bottle. Continuing Professional Education Units and Child Care Provider training hours will be offered to attendees.
