Iowa workplaces invited to join 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! movement
5-2-1-0 network already includes nearly 200 cross-sector sites
The Healthiest State Initiative, in partnership with the Iowa Department of Public Health, has launched a new opportunity for Iowa workplaces to support healthy choices for their employees. Employers of all sizes and representing all sectors are invited to sign up as a 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! Registered Workplace.
“The health of Iowa’s workforce is vital to the success and sustainability of our state in the future,” said Gerd Clabaugh, director of the Iowa Department of Public Health. “We’re calling on employers statewide to make the healthy choice the easy choice for their employees by aligning their wellness efforts to achieve the goals outlined by the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! initiative.”
5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! in the Workplace breaks down the key concepts of workplace wellness into the focus areas of Eat Well, Move More and Feel Better.
Registration is free and can be completed here. Workplaces who sign up will join an important network of sectors working towards healthier environments where Iowans live, learn, work and play. Nearly 200 schools, child care sites, out-of-school programs and health care clinics have already registered.

“By spreading the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! message across multiple sectors and age groups, we can create a comprehensive initiative that can benefit Iowans of all ages,” said Jami Haberl, executive director of the Healthiest State Initiative. “As role models for the children in their lives, we invite adults statewide to make healthy choices count while they’re at home and at work.”
Registered sites will receive resources to start or enhance an existing wellness program, as well as statewide recognition and eligibility to apply for a Healthiest State Annual Workplace Award, among other benefits. Workplaces will be surveyed annually to track their progress towards 5-2-1-0-related goals.
5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! initiative was launched statewide in October 2017 as a childhood health initiative. The message teaches Iowans how to make healthy choices by focusing on the importance of four numbers:
- 5 or more fruits or vegetables each day
- 2 hours or less of recreational screen time
- 1 hour or more of physical activity
- 0 sugary drinks – drink more water!
