Staying Healthy at the Iowa State Fair

Fitness on the HillWhat is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the Iowa State Fair? Probably the latest fried food on-a-stick, the sweet smell of freshly made funnel cakes, or one of the many unhealthy fair food options it has been made famous for offering. But did you know the Iowa State Fair also has plenty of healthy options to check out.  If your planning on making a visit to the fair this year, it doesn’t have to be hard on the waist line!  The Iowa State Fair offers patrons healthy activities and foods to keep you feeling great all week long.  

Start your day off with movement at Fitness on the Hill. All ages are invited to join in daily morning exercise led by YMCA instructors from across the state of Iowa. The event will be every morning from 9:30-10:00am on Expo Hill, located just east of the Cultural Center and near the Wind Turbine at the fairgrounds. Fitness on the Hill is not only a great way to start off each morning being active, but also encourages everyone to take 30 minutes out of every day to do a physical activity and remain healthy.

Looking for a snack that doesn’t pack a punch of nearly 1000 calories? The Iowa State Fair provides many options that meet the USDA guidelines for healthy meals.

  • Entrées less than 600 Calories.corn on the cob
  • Side dishes less than 300 Calories.
  • Less than 35 percent of Calories from total fat.
  • Less than 10 percent of Calories from saturated fat.
  • Less than 35 percent of Calories from sugar.
  • Less than 1000 mg of sodium
