Healthy (and tasty!) food at the Iowa State Fair

By Lauren Ehrler on Wednesday, August 15, 2018

It is possible to eat healthy (or at least make healthier choices) at the Iowa State Fair. We toured the fairgrounds in search of items that are not only good for you, but taste good too.

(Disclaimer: Fair traditionalists may be disappointed to see that no corndogs were consumed in the making of this video, but we did eat an item served on a stick!)

Here's what we ate:

Best of Show Cooler

coolerLocation: The Salad Bowl (second level of Agriculture Building)

Ingredients: Mango, orange, pineapple, agave, apple juice, lemon juice

Review: Refreshing and a great way to get your five daily servings of fruits or vegetables in while at the fair.

Strawberry Shaker Salad

saladLocation: G. Mig's Wrap Stand (Walnut Square)

Ingredients: Mixed greens, lettuce, strawberries, mozzarella, grapes, dried cranberries, candied nuts and strawberry balsamic dressing on the side

Review: Great portion size and price point for the fair. The wide variety of toppings kept this salad interesting!

Pork Chop-On-A-Stick

Review: If you're looking for something heartier, grilled meat is a great alternative to fried items at the fair.
