5 ways to pedal your way through May

May is National Bike Month – and there's no better way to celebrate than by taking your bike for a ride to enjoy the spring weather.

Cycling is a great low-impact exercise that keeps your heart healthy while strengthening joints and muscles. Plus, biking also has positive mental health effects. 

Whether you're an avid cyclist, or hopping back on your bike for the first time in a while – try these ideas to add some extra excitement to your exercise routine. You may find yourself “pedaling” your way through May and onto a great summer.

Seek out sunrise or sunset scenery

It is tough to find something more beautiful than an early morning sunrise or a summer sunset. Plan your bike ride around these times to not only exercise, but also enjoy some of nature’s most beautiful gifts. Here is a calendar of these times!

SAFETY TIP: If you'll be pedaling home after dark, be sure your bike is equipped with proper lighting and reflective gear.

Vitamin D can be absorbed through sunshine and it come with incredible health benefits. Vitamin D helps build strong bones (including your teeth!), promotes heart health, learning memory and is a natural mood booster. If the sun is shining, grab your bike and go!

Get the whole family involved!

A great way to turn hobbies into memorable activities is to share them with someone! While social distancing prevents us from riding with friends right now, grab members of your household and enjoy each other's company. 

SAFETY TIP: Ride in a single file line and maintain a 6-foot distance (when possible) when passing other groups on the trail.

Ride with some tunes

Music is a great way to keep your mind motivated during a bike ride. Create a list of your family's favorite tunes and play them while you ride.

SAFETY TIP: Remain aware of your surroundings. Avoid using headphones when riding on roadways.
