Starting today, American Public Health Association begins the ambitious goal of walking 1 billion steps by the end of National Public Health Week. The benefits of walking are well known, and whether you are already stepping it up or just getting started, we want YOU to be a part of the challenge.

Join the Iowa Healthiest State's team, or start your own team with a group of friends or co-workers. If you want to go big, APHA can help you promote a walking event to your entire community. APHA provides the technology platform, count the steps and even give you sample promotional materials you can customize and use to recruit participants. If you are already planning a steps challenge using another platform, APHA can count your activity toward the goal of 1 billion steps as well.

  1. Walk from today through April 9, or pick a time period in between for your challenge.
  2. Join Iowa Healthiest State's team, someone else’s team or start your own team. APHA tracks the total steps, steps for each team and steps for each person.
  3. You can sync your step-counting device or enter steps manually.

Take family walks, schedule walking meetings at the office, walk your children to school – the more people who join, the quicker we’ll reach 1 billion steps. Plus, we’ll be encouraging healthy habits among our family, friends and co-workers!
