What has been your biggest lesson learned from incorporating 5-2-1-0 in your practice?

"As a manager, just rolling it out to the staff and educating our staff on what it is. Some of the staff was not aware of what it was, let alone the parents," said Alex Schuerman, clinic manager.

Have you seen your patients positively impacted since you started sharing the 5-2-1-0 message?

"Parents are seeing the posters and going 'Oh my!' and the children are like, 'No, don’t show my parents that!'" said Dr. Padget Skogman. "It is definitely part of the discussion and triggers 'Ah ha' moments for parents. It is quick, well-digested knowledge. It’s an incredible educational tool."

Is there a piece of 5-2-1-0 that has changed the way you have administered your Well-Child visits?

The Mercy Cedar Rapids Pediatric Clinic staff said 5-2-1-0 has changed the questions they ask their patients. For example, asking how many servings they eat instead of simply asking if they eat fruits and vegetables. They also have started providing patients and their families with the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Habits Questionnaire ahead of time so the doctor can ask more specific questions during the visit.

In what ways do you see your facility growing with the 5-2-1-0 message?

The Mercy Cedar Rapids Pediatric Clinic staff has a long-term goal of being more of a resource to the obese pediatric population. They have enjoyed using 5-2-1-0 as a "stepping stone and structure" to start with, taking advantage of the pre-produced 5-2-1-0 handouts. "It’s a daunting task to tackle pediatric obesity so having (5-2-1-0) at our finger tips is huge," the staff said.

Have you seen your clinic staff impacted since taking on this message?

"As a staff we have thought about not always getting birthday cakes for birthdays. Why not get a veggie tray? Overall we want to incorporate healthy living for ourselves as well," said Dr. Skogman.
