Community Walk Mini Grant recipients announced
The Healthiest State Initiative and the Iowa Parks & Recreation Association (IAPRA) partnered to provide mini grant opportunity for IAPRA members to receive funding to support the Healthiest State 10th Annual Walk and walkability efforts in their community.
Winners were announced at the IAPRA Fall Workshop on September 15. Each community will receive a $500 mini grant. Congratulations:
- Des Moines
Adel is planning a two-part Healthiest State 10th Annual Walk event to engage all ages. A "Lunch Hour Launch" will target adults while a "Wacky Walk" will be hosted for kids. The events will also be used as an opportunity to share with community members plans for additional trails being added to the city. Grant funds will be used to support reusable signage encouraging walking, prizes and healthy snacks.
Decorah is inviting members of the community to walk with members of their household and plans to provide resources to encourage physical activity along with prizes to generate excitement. Grant funds will be used to create walking routes to provide to community members and to purchase reusable signage that will feature the benefits of walking along the designated routes.
Des Moines is inviting community members to utilize any of the city's trails to walk for 30 minutes on October 7. The grant funds will focus on promoting walkability in the city's largest park, Gray’s Lake, which sees an average of 1,069 daily trail users. Des Moines plans to purchase signage that promotes staying active and healthy, including fun facts and activities that can be done on the trail.
Muscatine is using the Healthiest State 10th Annual Walk as an awareness event for their community Walking Club, which was established in 2014 and has had more than 1,000 participants. The first 75 people who sign up for a group walk around Weed Park will receive a T-shirt. All participants will receive a healthy snack, water and information on the Walking Club and Muscatine’s Running River Trail System.
